NEW YOR CITY AND ITS CULTURE

New York is a very active U.S. city, one of whose peculiarities is its Culture. Residents of the New York metropolitan area often refer to it by expressions such as "The City and the acronym "NYC" which stands for New York City.

New York is the most multicultural city in the United States, and ethnically diverse worldwide. It is currently the second largest gateway for immigrants in the country, surpassed only by Los Angeles. Its multiculturalism gives it an international flavor and the stereotype that the United States is a "nation of immigrants". The city government employs thousands of translators, capable of translating a total of 180 different languages.

Because of heavy congestion, especially in Manhattan, and an excellent public transportation system (especially its subway system), six out of ten people use public transportation or walk to work, creating a kind of pedestrian culture, noticeably different from that in other major American cities (most notably Los Angeles), where it is the "car culture" that predominates. Interestingly, over 65% of the population don´t own cars. Even the former mayor, billionaire Michael Bloomberg, uses public trains every day as a means of getting around.

New York City is known worldwide for its skyscrapers and buildings scattered throughout the city with most of them concentrated in Manhattan. Many of these buildings are known worldwide. The Flatiron Building, with its 22 floors, was one of the first to open in New York in 1902.

In the 1930s many skyscrapers were built. First, the 77-storey Chrysler Building, completed in 1930. The Empire State Building (102 floors), one of the city's main postcards, was completed in 1931. The 72-story Rockefeller Center compound opened in 1940 and features a large plaza, famous especially in winter.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, many glass buildings were built in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Among them is the headquarters of the United Nations.

In 1973 the twin towers took over as the tallest buildings with their 110 floors and 410 meters of height. This lasted until 2001, when they were destroyed in the September 11 attacks. The city's tallest building is One World Trade Center, the main one in a series of brand-new skyscrapers built in Lower Manhattan on the site of and around the twin towers.

New York is the birthplace of many of the artistic styles (especially in literature, drama and music that later spread to the rest of the United States. One of the most popular art forms is theater. Most of the best and most well-known American plays were created and performed in the city.

There are several internationally renowned musical organizations, the most prominent of which are: New York Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most recognized orchestras in the world, and the Metropolitan Opera Association, which is an opera company. Most concerts led by internationally known artists are held at Carnegie Hall, situated around Central Park.

The most famous Sport in New York is Baseball unlike other major American cities where American Football is predominant.
